ROOTED is not a list of recommended products — it's the trusted standard for evaluating them. Every category is judged against its own published standard before a single product in it is rated. Standards come first. Products come second. People always.
The Tier System
Products sit in one of three tiers based on ROOTED's published standards. Every placement includes a written rationale. No pay-to-play. Ever.
TIER 1Rooted Approved
No meaningful compromises. Would confidently recommend to a family member.

The Rule
No brand can pay to improve their tier. If a brand reformulates, we update the rating with a date stamp. Tier assignments are living documents.
Category Standards
Every category is evaluated against its own published standard before any product in it is assigned a tier. Tap a category to see exactly what ROOTED looks for, what raises or lowers confidence, and how Tier 1/2/3 is defined specifically for that category.
Clothing sits directly against skin for hours at a stretch. ROOTED's core concern is material honesty — what a garment is actually made of and treated with — plus durability, since a shirt that lasts eight years beats three that last one year each.

Evaluation Questions
- What is the fiber content, and is any of it certified organic?
- Is the fabric treated with anything beyond dye?
- Is the dye process disclosed, and is it low-impact or natural?
- Will the construction hold up to years of regular wear and washing?
- Is manufacturing origin and labor practice disclosed?
Tradeoffs
100% natural fiber vs. performance/stretch: A small percentage of elastane for fit (e.g., 3-5% in waistbands) is a reasonable, common compromise most people accept.
Organic vs. conventional cotton: Conventional cotton isn't automatically disqualifying — dye/finishing chemistry matters more than the raw fiber growing method.
Durability vs. price: A well-constructed garment at a higher price is usually the better long-run value; this is disclosed, not assumed.
Tier Definitions
Tier 1: Predominantly certified-organic or otherwise verified natural fiber, disclosed low-impact dye, no added synthetic performance finishes, durable construction, transparent manufacturing.
Tier 2: Natural-fiber-dominant with a minor synthetic component, or natural fiber without organic certification but no red-flag finishing chemistry.
Tier 3: Meets basic safety thresholds (no PFAS, no formaldehyde finishing) but may be majority synthetic blend or lack fiber/dye transparency.
Exceptions
- Technical/athletic gear with genuine performance synthetics may be evaluated on a separate, disclosed basis rather than penalized identically to everyday wear.
- Budget constraints and regional availability are acknowledged — Tier 3 exists for this.
Future Research Notes
- Monitoring PFAS regulation changes affecting "performance" fabric treatments.
- Emerging natural performance fibers (merino blends, lyocell) need a clearer green-flag threshold.
- Microplastic shedding from synthetic-blend garments during washing is an active research area.
The mouth absorbs ingredients directly through mucous membranes, and oral care is used daily for life. ROOTED's concern is both formulation (what's actually in it) and the physical product itself, since toothbrushes and floss are frequently single-use plastic.

Evaluation Questions
- Is the full ingredient list disclosed, and is it short relative to category norms?
- Does the formula contain SLS, artificial dyes/sweeteners, or triclosan?
- What is the product physically made from, and is any part single-use plastic with no better-designed alternative?
- For fluoride products: is content and sourcing clearly disclosed, with a fluoride-free option also offered?
- Is there independent testing behind any safety claim?
Tradeoffs
Fluoride vs. fluoride-free: ROOTED does not take a public position on fluoride's efficacy or safety — the standard is disclosure. Both fluoride and fluoride-free options are eligible for Tier 1 if otherwise compliant.
Plastic-free vs. functional performance: A bamboo-handled brush with a nylon bristle head is a reasonable middle ground — full bristle "naturalness" isn't required.
Tier Definitions
Tier 1: Short, disclosed ingredient list free of SLS/artificial dyes/triclosan; durable or reduced-waste hard-goods design; fluoride content (if any) clearly disclosed.
Tier 2: Minor formulation compromise or standard plastic hard-goods without a waste-reduction design, while avoiding all red-flag ingredients.
Tier 3: Avoids the most significant red flags but may contain SLS or be a fully conventional disposable design.
Exceptions
- Orthodontic and retainer products prescribed by a dental professional are evaluated for material safety only, not penalized for lack of "natural" branding.
- Travel-sized conventional products get the same standard as full-size.
Future Research Notes
- Microplastic exposure from toothbrush bristle wear — limited current data.
- Tracking independent (non-industry-funded) research on SLS irritation prevalence.
- Silicone-based interdental tools need a clearer green/red-flag position as more appear.
Cookware experiences repeated heating and direct food contact, which makes material choice unusually consequential — heat accelerates coating breakdown. Materials that don't need a coating to function (stainless, cast iron, carbon steel, glass) are structurally simpler to trust.

- What is the base material, and does it require a coating to function?
- If coated, is the coating fully disclosed, and PFAS-free — not just "PFOA-free"?
- What plastic, if any, touches food during normal use, and at what temperature?
- Is the product designed and warrantied for long-term (10+ year) use?
- Are there documented, independent reports of coating degradation under normal use?
Tradeoffs
Non-stick convenience vs. inert material: ROOTED does not currently consider mainstream non-stick coatings (PTFE or ceramic-based) Tier 1 — this is a real, conscious convenience tradeoff people make.
Cast iron/carbon steel maintenance vs. stainless convenience: Not a safety tradeoff, just a usability one — noted, not scored.
Weight/heat retention vs. ease of handling: Disclosed, not penalized.
Tier Definitions
Tier 1: Fully inert base material with no coating required for function, no plastic in hot-food contact, disclosed manufacturing.
Tier 2: Inert base material with a minor plastic component not in food contact, or a fully disclosed ceramic-based non-stick coating with no PFAS.
Tier 3: Conventional non-stick with disclosed "PFOA-free" PTFE coating and no documented early degradation.
Exceptions
- Professional/commercial kitchen equipment evaluated separately where a consumer standard doesn't apply.
- Baby-feeding cookware/utensils held to a stricter version of this standard, not a looser one.
Future Research Notes
- Tracking PFAS regulatory action (several states have passed or proposed cookware-specific bans).
- "Ceramic non-stick" covers genuinely different chemistries — needs clearer sub-classification.
- Aluminum core (anodized, sandwiched) cookware needs more specific criteria.
Water is consumed constantly and in large volume, which makes even small per-serving differences meaningful over a lifetime. The standard spans two questions: what's filtered out of (or added to) the water, and what it sits in before reaching someone's mouth.

Tradeoffs
Filtration thoroughness vs. mineral content: Aggressive filtration removes more contaminants but also strips beneficial minerals — resolved by remineralization, not by picking a weaker filter.
Convenience of bottled vs. environmental/plastic tradeoff: Not disqualified for convenience use, but disclosed as secondary to home filtration where available.
Upfront system cost vs. long-term cost: A certified system usually costs less per gallon over time than routine bottled water.
Tier Definitions
Tier 1: Independently certified filtration for its specific claims, inert container material, remineralization addressed if applicable, realistic disclosed maintenance.
Tier 2: Certified filtration with a minor gap, or a generally safe plastic container without full third-party verification.
Tier 3: Basic, uncertified but reputable-brand filtration — meaningfully better than tap alone.
Exceptions
- Emergency preparedness water storage/purification evaluated against different, disclosed criteria (shelf stability, portability).
- Regional water quality varies significantly; a product may be rated with a note on which contaminant profile it's most relevant for.

Personal care products are applied directly to skin, often daily, and many ingredients are absorbed rather than just sitting on the surface. This is also the category most saturated with "clean beauty" marketing that doesn't correspond to real formulation differences.

Tradeoffs
"Clean" formulation vs. proven efficacy: ROOTED does not rate a poorly-performing natural product above a well-formulated conventional one purely on ingredient philosophy.
Mineral vs. chemical sunscreen: Mineral is the green-flag default, but texture/cosmetic-elegance tradeoffs are real — a product someone won't wear provides zero protection.
Antiperspirant function vs. ingredient simplicity: Blocking sweat requires an active ingredient; evaluated on its own safety merits.
Tier Definitions
Tier 1: Full ingredient transparency, no flagged ingredients, demonstrated efficacy, appropriate packaging.
Tier 2: Mostly clean formulation with one minor flagged ingredient at low concentration and clear disclosure, or proven-effective conventional formula with a documented, minor tradeoff.

Local Food Map (CSA & Local Food Sourcing)
Buying directly from a farm shortens the distance between grower and eater. This category functions as a verified directory rather than a tiered rating — the standard is whether a listing is real, current, and genuinely direct-from-source, since the core value comes from the sourcing model itself.

Tradeoffs
Certified organic vs. "practicing organic" small farms: Certification cost is a real barrier for small operations, not a signal of lower quality — disclosed per listing, not excluded.
Established/large market vs. small/informal CSA: Both listed when verifiable; a large certified market isn't inherently more trustworthy than a small farm-direct CSA.
Tier Definitions
Tier 1: Not applicable in the Tier 1/2/3 sense. A listing either meets the verification bar above and appears on the map, or it doesn't and isn't listed. There is no ranking among active, verified listings.
Exceptions
- Markets/CSAs disrupted by disaster are listed with a clear "returning" status and date rather than removed, if return is confirmed via reliable current reporting.
- Seasonal-only operations are listed with their actual season noted.
Future Research Notes
- Building a recurring re-verification cadence so listings don't silently go stale as the map grows.
- Expanding beyond the current LA/Santa Monica curated layer into other cities.
- Considering a "last verified" date shown per listing.
Food is consumed more frequently and in greater volume than any other category, so small quality differences compound significantly over time. The focus is nutrient density, ingredient integrity, and sourcing transparency — not a specific diet ideology.

Tradeoffs
Convenience/packaged food vs. whole-food ideal: Packaged food is evaluated on its own curve relative to other packaged options, not penalized for not being unprocessed.
Organic vs. local: When these conflict, both documented as valid, different priorities rather than one being universally superior.
Cost vs. quality: Genuinely acknowledged as real; Tier 3 exists specifically for this.
Tier Definitions
Tier 1: Short, whole-food ingredient list, disclosed and verified sourcing, no red-flag additives, minimal processing for its category.
Tier 2: Mostly clean formulation with one or two minor compromises and no major red flags.

Tradeoffs
Natural latex firmness/cost vs. memory foam contouring: A genuine preference and performance tradeoff — both can reach Tier 1/2 depending on certification.
Wool flame-barrier vs. synthetic-free claims: Some "natural" mattresses use wool specifically as flame protection — this is the green-flag approach, not a compromise.
